Shaping up the first seminar

The convenors of this series have been putting a lot of work into planning the first event, which will take place in Edinburgh on 11th and 12th June 2015. Our goal is to try to instigate a rich and productive debate over autism practice in the UK, covering questions such as

  • what is the current status of autism practice (in education, health and social care) in the UK?
  • how can we build an evidence base for improved autism practice?
  • what are the supports required by the autism community? and what are the obstacles to getting these evidenced and delivered?
Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid

Menus for Edinburgh

Kabie Brook, Autistic activist and co-host for the Edinburgh Autism Practice seminar, suggested to me that posting details of the seminar lunch menus would be helpful for autistic delegates. However it occurs to me that I would love to know this sort of information in advance when I’m attending professional events.  As so often, inclusive ‘adjustments’ are to the benefit of everyone. So here we go…

Lunch on Thursday will be a cold buffet of salads, breads and:

Thoughts from our Edinburgh seminar sponsor

Scottish Autism is a research engaged organisation, and recognises that meaningful dialogue between the world of research and the world of practice is vital if we are to provide innovative and enabling support for people on the spectrum and their families. Through engagement of this kind we can foster quality research that is translatable and applicable to services, and also generate practice-based evidence that establishes the most effective support for the wellbeing of those individuals and families that we support.

Keep an eye out for information about the upcoming Autism Practice seminar being held in Edinburgh on 11th & 12th June being posted over the next few days.

Developing and sharing approaches to research informed practice

Edinburgh, Scotland

The goal of the first seminar in this ESRC-funded series is for researchers to come together with the autism community, including autistic adults, parents of children with autism and practitioners in health, education, social services and the third sector, to identify challenges and solutions to creating, evaluating and disseminating evidence-based supports for children and adolescents.

The seminars will have only a few talks and be largely structured around chaired expert panel discussions and small group sessions.

We need to know the most effective ways to educate autistic children and provide life skills whilst respecting them as individuals

The Autism Practice seminars will focus upon question such as: What do we mean by ‘evidence’ when referring to autism interventions? How do we measure the effectiveness of school-based programmes? What 'outcome’ measures should we use to test the effectiveness of interventions and supports and who gets to make these decisions? Should we be developing and applying an agreed standardised sets of outcomes?

The seminars in this Priority Area are led by Tony Charman and Sue Fletcher-Watson
